The octagonal shape with flat sides allows the hammer to slide across surfaces and strike in areas with minimal clearance. One side of the head is dead flat, perfect for striking chisels and nails. The opposite side of the head is slightly convex, especially for setting small nails while minimizing the risk of damaging the surrounding wood.
